Reps to police: produce those who attempted to kill Melaye

The House of Representatives has asked the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris to fish out and prosecute persons behind the alleged assassination attack on Sen. Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi).
The House made the call on Thursday following a motion sponsored by Mr. Herman Hembe (APC, Benue).
Hembe in the motion, condemned the assassination attempt on the senator, describing it as needless.
He also blamed the police for failing to respond to calls for help, saying “despite several calls to the Divisional Police Officer of Aiyetero Gbedde Police Division, the police did not come until the gunmen exhausted themselves and escaped.

According to the lawmaker, “Melaye survived what appeared to have been an attempted assassination by the sheer grace of God,”stressing that unknown men stormed the Senator’s residence on April 14, 2017 and started shooting sporadically to the building and cars parked in the premises for over an hour.
Speaking on the motion, Mr. Solomon Ahwinahwi (PDP, Delta) said “Dino must have said so many things but it is not enough to kill him. I think there is need for us to invite the Inspector-General of Police to explain the circumstances surrounding the criminal act.
In his contribution, Mr. Anayo Nnebe (PDP, Anambra) urged the police to intensify efforts toward stemming cases of assassination in the country, adding that “Dino was lucky that the attack did not consume him, next person may not be lucky.”
The Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara referred the motion to the House Committees on Legislative Compliance and Police Affairs to ensure implementation to report back within four weeks.
